Caranx sexfasciatus

The bigeye trevally, also known as the bigeye jack, great trevally, six-banded trevally and dusky jack, is a widespread large marine fish of the jack family, Carangidae. It is found throughout the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, from South Africa in the west to California and Ecuador in the east, and from Japan in the north to Australia in the south.

Habitat

The species ranges widely through the tropical and subtropical waters of both the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In the Indian Ocean it occurs from South Africa and Madagascar in the west, up the east African coast into the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, and eastward along India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia and many offshore islands, reaching north to Japan and south to Australia. In the Pacific it inhabits most tropical island groups, including Hawaii, with its range extending east as far as the western American coast.

Behaviour

The bigeye trevally is a fast-swimming predator that is mostly inactive by day, feeding instead at dusk and through the night. Its large stationary aggregations break up as fish move off to hunt singly or in small groups. It preys mainly on small fish but rounds out its diet with a wide range of invertebrates, including shrimps, decapods, copepods and stomatopods, as well as cephalopods, gastropods, jellyfish, sponges and even open-ocean sea-skater insects.
